Guide
Everything Front of Mind does, in one page.
Install
- Download the app (macOS 12 or later, Apple silicon and Intel).
- Open the .dmg and drag Front of Mind into Applications, then open it.
- A small pill appears at the top of your screen, with an icon in the menu bar.
Connect Linear
- Click the task name on the pill to open the drawer, then Connect with Linear.
- Linear opens in your browser. Approve access for Front of Mind.
- Check the code in the browser matches the one in the app, and confirm. Your assigned issues appear.
Prefer not to use the browser? You can paste a personal API key instead (Linear → Settings → Account → Security & access). Either way, the credentials stay in your Mac's Keychain. Several Linear accounts can be connected; switch between them from your name at the bottom of the drawer.
Track time
- Start and pause with the play button, or ⌃⌥T from anywhere.
- Each pause sends your total to Linear as a “Time tracked” card on the issue, one per person: “4h 15m across 6 sessions”.
- Session notes (“What are you working on?” in the drawer) are posted on the issue as a comment with the time when the session ends.
- Switch tasks with the ‹ › arrows on hover (your recent tasks), the project circle (tickets in that project), or Switch task… in the drawer, which searches the whole workspace.
- Add time by hand in the drawer:
1h 30m,90mor1.5. - Away from your desk? After 5 minutes away with the timer running, it asks whether to keep that time.
The pill
- The coloured dot is the issue's status; click it to change status.
- The circle is the project; click it to jump to another ticket, create a ticket or a project.
- Drag the pill to any screen edge and it tucks into a small clock tab that opens when you hover.
Edit tickets
The drawer mirrors Linear's issue view. Click the title, description or any property (status, priority, assignee, labels, project, cycle, estimate, due date) to change it. Descriptions show Linear formatting, and typing @ tags a teammate. Sub-issues are listed under the description with + Add.
New tickets and projects
The project circle → New ticket in…, the menu bar → New ticket…, or Switch task… → + New ticket. Pick a project, or choose + New project…; the ticket is assigned to you and the timer can start on it straight away.
Reports
Menu bar icon → Reports…: your time by day, project and ticket for this week, last week, this or last month, or the last 30 days, with CSV export. These stay on your Mac.
Pro: team reports
In Reports, Sign in with Linear and confirm the code. Your finished sessions are then sent to the team dashboard, where everyone in your Linear workspace who signs in sees the team's time by person, project and ticket, with CSV export. Each workspace gets 14 days free; then it's billed per person who logged time that month.
Privacy
Front of Mind only tracks what you start: no screenshots and no activity monitoring. Your time is stored on your Mac and in Linear; only Pro sends it to our server. Details in the privacy policy.
